Grandfather Pork Bun, through his wealth of connections, negotiated their quick return home first thing in the morning. Father Pork Bun was waiting eagerly for them outside the house, and wasted no time in allowing everyone to freshen up.
By lunchtime both the Dumpling and the Pork Bun Clans were sat round the table. The young couple served tea to their respective elders as a mark of respect and humble apology. Soon the latest news of the missing pair spread through the village – thanks to the newly installed, ultra shiny gossip balloon generator 2.0!
It seemed only appropriate to mark the closing of the two Clan’s recent emotional rollercoaster and the acceptance of a new beginning with a stunning display of fireworks, while sipping lobster and lychee bubble tea.
As the events of Dim Sum Island draws to a close, I’ll be back next week with some new monsters!
The large shadow on the cave wall turned out to belong to a much smaller and rather frail character: Grandfather Pork Bun!
The two runaways were rather dumbfounded as it turns out he had been waiting for them on the mainland coast. Miss Pork Bun couldn’t understand how her grandfather managed to find them. It was at this point that he revealed a painful event from her mother’s past.
Mother Pork Bun had also tried to leave Dim Sum Island in her youth during a moment of love rage. Her infatuation was in fact for Mr Dumpling’s uncle, a gentleman far senior in his age to even consider someone in their youth. And so when she proposed to meet him on the Mainland coast to start a new life elsewhere he did not even consider that for a moment it would be viable.
Strong feelings blinded her from reality and she waited on the Mainland for days. He never came of course and she only returned to the Island after Grandfather Pork Bun found her in these exact set of caves. Since that fateful day Mother Pork Bun’s anger and resentment could only grow stronger over the years and she would find herself grasping at events of the past, such as the drought of 1938, to reinforce her hatred of him. She told herself she should never forgot the shame and embarrassment that he had caused; never be so naive and trust those of the Dumpling Clan. In reality the villagers thought little of it and it had been quickly forgotten as an unfortunate episode that happens as one grows up.
Miss Pork Bun finally understood her mother a little better and realised that her own actions would only deepen her misunderstanding and mistrust with the Dumpling Clan. Running away was not the answer. Mr Dumpling understood this too and with some reluctance, agreed to return home.
As the two settle down in a nearby coastal cave for their first night on the mainland Miss Pork Bun starts to feel homesick and doubts cloud her mind. Holding the photo taken on their first date she looks back at the events that had led them to this point.
Miss Pork Bun and Mr Dumpling had known each other since childhood but it was regular visits to the local cafe for bubble tea that brought them together. Their friendship grew and soon blossomed. They even created their own custom lychee lobster flavoured tea during one of their initial dates. However, soon after they had made their feelings for each other known publicly that things started to get difficult.
Mother Pork Bun, strict and aloof, did nothing to hide her anger and disapproval. She started to act strangely and tried to prevent her daughter leaving the house. The young couple felt they had little choice but to run away. Although Dim Sum Island is relatively small it had been a challenge to leave. The Island and the surrounding sea had rare minerals vital for the health of all those born native to the area. Leaving is a decision taken very seriously as illnesses brought on by the lack of these minerals can have dire consequences. Much planning had taken place to allow them to get this far.
Miss Pork Bun’s thoughts trailed to a sudden halt when she noticed with great alarm: a large shadow on the cave wall!
The Dum Sum Village’s gossip balloon machine explodes in a burst of colours caused by the overload of recent sightings. In that little part of the world life suddenly seemed so peaceful and silence was felt for the first time in a long while..
So far so good for Miss Pork Bun and Mr Dumpling so have managed to reach the mainland undetected in the dead of night. The Puff Pastry Police on Dim Sum Island may not be known for their high success rates at solving cases but the Mainland Patrol were quite the opposite. For their own safety, the residents of Dim Sum Island are discouraged from leaving their homes and the Patrol always made sure these protection orders were carried out fully…
With no sign of the missing individuals the two families are deeply worried. But then as if to answer their prays sightings all over Dim Sum Island were reported.
‘The forest on the island is so dense but I’m sure I saw them near the Tea Fortune Teller’s house.’
‘Oh dear! They gave me such a fright- one minute snooping around the soybean fields and then suddenly, gone!’
Ms Egg Tart:
‘I saw her at the foot of the hills. I’m sure she was Miss Pork Bun. She had such a striking resemblance to the image on the village notice board.’
